October 14, 2018

We have been at the Altus AFB Famcamp for a few days now and it has been gloomy and rainy for most of that time.  Most of this moisture has been the remnants of a tropical storm out of Mexico and to make all this worse, we are supposed to get some strong northerly winds today.  We were only scheduled to spend three days here but due to the weather we will be staying today and possibly tomorrow as well.

Yesterday we made a road trip down to Wichita Falls, TX. to pick up some clothes Joyce had ordered then we had lunch a Chili’s then we drove out to Sheppard AFB.

Both Joyce and I have been to Sheppard.  After basic training at Lackland AFB (now part of Joint Base San Antonio) in August 1966 they put me on a bus bound for Sheppard where I trained as an aircraft mechanic on the C-130.  I returned to attend C-5 school late in 1969 then came back in 1978 for basic flight engineer school.  Joyce came to Sheppard for basic loadmaster training in 1981.  A lot of memories were brought back driving around the base.

Man, the wind can blow in Oklahoma.  It started blowing about 2:30 yesterday afternoon and has been steady all night with gusts up to 40 MPH.  It’s supposed to die down sometime this afternoon.
We went to see the new movie out “First Man” which is about Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the Moon. We both thought the movie was a bit boring.

 October 18, 2018

Yes, we’re still at Altus AFB waiting until some of the bad weather clears up down in Texas.  There’s  a lot of flooding going on down that way.  In fact, we had a reservation for the Speegleville Park but yesterday I got an email from recreation.gov telling me that the park was closing due to flooding and all folks there were told to leave immediately.  We were fortunate to be able to stay for additional days.

Given all of the weather we have made several changes to our travel plans.  We won’t be going to College Station to visit the President George H. W. Bush Library until later in the year.  We’ll probably make a trip over there while we are in San Antonio.  We still plan to head over to Goliad, TX unless the flooding affects that area later in the week.  As we always say, “all our plans are written in Jello”.

On Monday evening we had supper at Fat Daddy’s with my good friend Charlie Anderson who was a C-5 flight engineer.  Thanks for meeting up with us Charlie and especially for picking up the tab.

Yesterday we decided to drive over to Fort Sill which is just outside of Lawton.  Sill is a huge Army post with a lot more amenities than at Altus.  Of course we made the oblatory exchange and commissary run.

We finally left Altus on Saturday and headed down to Mineral Wells, TX where we spent one night at the Rocker D RV Park.  After getting set up in our site we decided to go have lunch and found Mi Fiesta Mexican Restaurant.  Very authentic and delicious food with excellent service.

Y’all may recall that we have been having some trouble with our front leveling jack not working.  Since the company that made our jacks has gone out of business parts are becoming very hard to find anywhere.  After much searching the internet and some phone calls I finally found a solenoid at Colaw RV Salvage in Carthage, MO. that set us back $250 plus shipping.

Well, just for grins I tried it when leveling and it worked as advertised.  I moved it up and down several times with no problem so we hope it will be good for awhile.  We’re probably going to keep the solenoid just in case.

We left Mineral Wells about 10:30 and headed east on I-20 then picking up I-37W outside of Fort Worth and eventually hooked up to I-35.  I-35 is one of the heaviest traveled stretch of interstate in the country making the driving tense most of the way.  Given the speed limit is 75 MPH doesn’t make it any easier either.  We finally made it to Elm Mott and the I-35 RV Park & Resort around 1 PM.

After getting tucked into our parking space we decided to drive out to the Speegleville Park where we intended to stay until all of the flooding happened at lake Waco.  And flooded it did in a big way.

Joyce and I get our mail sent to a mail forwarding service in Brookings, OR.  When we want our mail sent we just call them and give them the address for them to send whatever is in our mailbox.  Sometimes we have the mail sent to a “general delivery” address so we always try to use a small town post office to make everything easier.  All that said, we chose McGregor, TX which is south of Waco since we had planned to camp just outside of the city.  The drive to McGregor was twenty-five miles so yesterday we drove down there and picked up the package.

After completing that chore we stopped at a Great Clips in Waco for haircuts and had lunch a a great seafood place, The Catch.  They had the best catfish we have had in a very long time.

After lunch we got pedicures done at a little shop next to The Catch.

October 24, 2018

We left Waco about 10 AM and headed down to the Colorado Landing RV Park in La Grange, TX.  The drive down was fairly easy considering we were on the two lane US-77.  La Grange is the county seat of Fayette County and a great little town.  We have been here before when we were volunteering at Goliad State Historical Park.  The park staff asked if we would help out with the Christmas program at Monument Hill & Kreische Brewery State Historic Sites.

While here we visited the Texas Quilt Museum which we thought was fantastic.  If it had been open we would have toured there again.

After getting set up in our very long back in site we drove into town looking for a place to get some forms notarized and faxed. Later we had a nice supper at the Sealand Seafood and Steak restaurant.

Later.

October 5, 2018

We left the Elks Lodge in Colorado Springs got on I-25 south headed to Lamar, CO.  We turned off onto US 50 in Pueblo and made it to the Sundance High Plains RV Park in good time.  We had planned to stay at the Elk Lodge but we had some laundry to do and this PV park has a nice laundry facility.

Yesterday morning we left Lamar about 10 AM, got on US 287 and arrived at the Elks Lodge here in Dalhart, CO.  This is a very small lodge that has four RV sites with 30 amp electric and water.  When we pulled in there were no other RV’s here.

I went over to pay for our parking when the bartender’s got here at 4 PM and was told they have no set rate for RV’s and just for us to make an donation.  Given there is no sewer or dump station we gave them $20 for two days.

All of the folks on the lodge that we met were really nice and gave us a lot of information about the town.  However, one thing we dislike is that they allow smoking and the smell was overpowering.

While in Dalhart we visited the Dallam-Hartley XIT Museum which contains several rooms with exhibits on ranching, the wildlife in the Texas Panhandle and more.  It also has extensive exhibits telling the story of the XIT Ranch which in the 1880’s was the largest range in the world under fence.

The ranch covered three million acres covering portions of ten counties leading to the misbelief that XIT meant “Ten In Texas”.  The XIT brand actually originated to thwart rustlers.  The ranch once ran 150,000 head of cattle.  The ranch ceased operation in 1912 and all of the land was sold off by 1963.

October 9, 2018

We left  Dalhart on the 7th and headed south to Amarillo, TX.  We had planned to stay at a Passport America park on the east side of the city but we looked at the weather and decided to stay at the Oasis RV Resort west of the city.  That turned out to be a good decision since the other park had some flooding.

After getting set up in our parking site we packed an overnight bag and went to visit Jim and Linda Hotz.  We met a number of years ago at Lockhart State Park in Lockhart, TX.  Linda had planned a Gumbo supper and had invited their daughter and her family over as well.

This set of spurs, used by Mr. Jim for a long time, we made out of a head light rim from a Model T Ford

While we were there we all were paying close attention to the weather as severe thunderstorms were forecasted in the area.  In fact we were watching the radar and saw a very large thunderstorm move across the RV park.  The news was reporting some rotation in the cell with quarter-size hail.  That nasty stuff went on most of the night.

On Sunday morning I got up early and drove out to the RV park to check on our rig and was very pleased to see everything was good.

After having lunch with Jim and Linda we headed back to our RV.  Last night we did get some more rain and wind in the area but no thunderstorms thank goodness.

After getting up this morning we checked the weather and radar returns for our route over to Altus AFB, OK.  What we saw was not good.  There was as lot of rain and some really big stuff over that way. The Weather Channel app I have indicated there was some flooding on US-287, the way we were headed.  After evaluating all of that we decided to hang in here in Amarillo for one more night.

We had been wanting to go visit the Jack Sisemore Traveland RV Museum here for a long time so after having a delicious breakfast at Jacobo’s Cafe we headed there.  The museum is actually in the back of the RV dealership so you walk through their store to get to the entrance.

The collection is really interesting with some very old trailers and RV’s as well as their collection of Harley Davidson motorcycles.  One of the trailers is the worlds oldest Airstream, a 1935 Torpedo.  The collection also includes the 1948 Flxible bus that was used in the Robin Williams movie “RV”.  There is even the Flexible Owners International for those RV’s.

October 11, 2018

Yesterday we left Oasis RV Resort about 10:15 and immediately ran into a problem.  There is a Loves Truck Stop near the park and a CRST trucking had tried to make a u-turn in the road and got his tractor stuck in the mud.  That left his 53 foot trailer blocking the road.  So, after weighing our options we decided to unhook our car and back up into the RV park.  After parking Joyce drove down a gravel back road and thought we could go that way to get out to the interstate.  There was a section that had some soft mud but we made it thru with no problems and finally got out to I-40.  One would think that the manager of the RV park would have sent someone down that road to check it out for fols.

After stopping for some propane and lunch in Claude, TX we finally made it to the Famcamp at Altus AFB, OK at 4 PM.

More about our stay at Altus later.

September 22, 2018

We left Challis about 10:30, jumped on Hwy 93 and made the run down to the Buffalo Meadows Campground (Fort Hall Casino) near Fort Hall, ID.  Joyce has a player’s card there so she called about any goodies she might have.  How ‘bout a free room!  Since we wouldn’t use the room they exchanged that for a free RV site.

When we started to level the RV the front jack would not work.  I checked the fluid level (added a little) and anything else I could think of that would get us going.  So, I called Jim Glaspey my “go-to guy“  who usually gets me out of trouble.  He asked if I had tapped on the control Valve solenoid.  I told him no and that I would when we get to our next stop.

This morning we left Fort Hall, got back on 93 south then picked up I-15 to Hill AFB, UT. where we will be spending two nights.  We’ve been here several times during our travels and always enjoy the base and area.

Before setting up in our parking site, I tapped the jack control valve solenoid and wha-la, it worked.  I owe you another beer Jimmy.

September 23, 2018

Yesterday we met Ron and Katie Cutler at the Goodwood Barbecue in Riverdale, UT for lunch.  Ron and Katie live in Payson which is south of here.  Joyce and I were scheduled to go down to visit them but due to a fire in the area where we usually park, we cancelled that part of our trip.  It was great to see them again.  By the way, if you are even in this area of the country be sure to have a meal at Goodwood’s.

We left Hill AFB about 10:30, and went to the the Exchange Gas Station to fill up with diesel fuel. We paid $3.35 a gallon with our Exchange Star Card discount and took on 47 gallons.  After that we left the base,  got on I-84 then picked up I-80 eastbound and arrived at the Sweetwater Fairgrounds RV Park in Rock Springs, WY about 3:00 PM.  We fought a right quartering wind all the way up.

After getting set up in the park we drove into town to pick up a few things and then stopped at  Marty’s Gastro Pub for a cold one and have some supper.  They have fifty-eight beers on tap so I had the bartender pick me out one.  I told her I like Lager’s so she selected the Jenny Lake from the Snake River Brewing in Jackson Hole.  It was delicious.  The food was excellent as well.

September 25, 2018

We left Rock Springs early trying to beat the forecasted high winds on I-80 but apparently we didn’t leave early enough.  After about thirty minutes of driving the crosswinds picked up and got really strong.  We made it to the Western Hills Campground in Rawlins, WY about 11:30 am, pulled into a site (the office was closed) and got set up.  The winds were very bad so I checked how it was in Casper which was better.  So, we hooked up and headed up that way after stopping for fuel.

While after driving a short time Joyce called the RV park in Casper and was told there was no room at the inn so we turned around and headed back to Rawlins.  When we parked we decided not to deploy our slides since the winds were gusting to about 40 mph.

By this time we were ready for an adult beverage so we headed to Buck’s Sports Grill, a combination of a sports bar and a dive.  We had a great time getting to know some of the locals and some really great food.

This morning we got on the road at 9:30 and headed up to Casper getting into the Fort Casper Campground around 12:00.

I did talk to an RV mechanic here about looking at our Rv’s leveling jack problem but we aren’t sure about having him do anything.  He’s said it was unlikely that he could get any parts in the time we are going to be here so I think we’ll just press on and get the thing fixed later.  We can always level the front end the old fashioned way with blocks.

September 29, 2018

We had a good visit with Joyce’s sister and her family in Casper.  We all went out for dinner on the Tuesday. Joyce made pulled-pork one night on Wednesday night.
Ariella

We left Casper about 12:30 am yesterday and headed south on I-25 arriving at the Terry Bison Ranch RV Park around 3:00.  It drizzled most of the way down and it was darned cold when we arrived here.

After getting set up we drove out to F.E. Warren AFB to do a little shopping at the Commissary then we started looking for something to eat.  We found a place called T-Joe’s Steakhouse and Saloon, which both of us thought was really a Tahoe Joe’s.  Joyce’s phone GPS said that it was an 11 mile drive to get there so off we went.

Well, T-Joe’s is not Tahoe Joe’s but we are really glad we found this place.  I ordered the rib-eye steak which was outstanding but the highlight for the evening was their special all you can eat b-b-q beef ribs.  They were delicious.  If you are ever passing though Cheyenne make sure to make the drive east on I-80 about 11 miles for supper.

September 30, 2018

Yesterday we made the “hard” 50 mile drive to Lake Boyd State Park in Loveland, CO.  After getting setup in our site we drove to the Loveland Outlet Mall to check out the Workwear store.

I love Carhartt t-shirts and since some of mine needed replacing I bought several.  We also took a drive down to Thornton to check out the Deluth Trading Company, but got out of there without buying anything.

This morning we met Julie Harris and her boyfriend Matt at the Johnson’s Corner Truck Stop for breakfast.  Joyce and I have known Julie for many years going back to our Travis AFB days.  We had a delicious breakfast and a very nice visit.

The main reason we came to Loveland was that Joyce could meet up with here 1st cousin Deb Romero who she had not seen in about 30 years.  Deb and Joyce had a good time reminiscing about their time together when they were children and bring each other up-to-date on there lives.

October 2, 2018

We left Boyd Lake State Park about 10 am.  After a stop on the way down for fuel ($3.09 a gallon) we arrived at the Colorado Springs Elks Lodge about 12:30.  After pulling into the parking lot we discovered our right rear outside tire was flat.

I called our roadside assistance service and again they would not send someone out to fix the tire at the Elks Lodge but they would tow us.  Well, I can’t even guess how long that would take so we went to Plan B.  About a mile from our turnoff to the Lodge I though I had heard a loud “pop” but wasn’t sure and at that time I didn’t feel anything funny.

Joyce found the Goodyear Commercial Tire Center very near us so we decided to drive there. We were met by Michael and he quickly got the tire off and found the problem.  Some where we had run over a portion of a Kershaw knife blade.  After checking the tire out he told us that it could not be repaired.  Fortunately they had a tire in stock.  After all was said and done we paid $583 for a Goodyear tire.  I guess it could have been worse.  It could have blown and caused more damage.
This is what killed the tire.
After getting back to the Elks and getting settled in our parking site we got in touch with Brandy Haskins who we have known since we worked at Sunflower RV Resort in Surprise, AZ a few years ago.  She came over to the Lodge and then we met her daughter’s where we at Senior Manuel’s for dinner.  By-the-way, if you are ever in the C-Springs area Joyce and I highly recommend the restaurant.

Brandy works for the Broadmoor’s Soaring Adventure as a zip line tour guide and during dinner she asked if we wanted to do the tour the next day.  We talked about the two tours they offer and after much discussion we selected the most difficult Fins course.

After the van ride up the mountain and a short hike down to the beginning, Brandy and our other guide Matt briefed us on safety and then got us hooked up in our harnesses.  Next we did a little practicing on a short line before hiking to the first platform.

Neither Joyce or I were ready for this, even though the first zip was fairly short and not too high off the ground.  Well, that was nothing compared to what came after that.

I can’t even begin to tell you what a exhilarating experience this was.  But, you can get an idea of the tours by watching the video’s here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FmzzGOZHug&feature=youtu.be
