Today we took a drive over to Yuma, AZ so that Joyce could do some shopping at Jo-Ann's Fabrics for a project she is working on and to visit the Yuma State Territorial Prison State Park.

The Sally Port

 The original Guard Post

Six guys were housed in these cells.  If one got in trouble, they were all chained to the floor ring.

The prison accepted it's first inmate on July 1, 1876 and was used until 1909 when the new prison in Florence, AZ was opened.  During those 33 years, the prison housed 3069 inmates, including 29 women.

Yesterday we had breakfast with Hugh and Sarah MacAlister, who we camp hosted with a few years back at Valley of the Rouge State Park in Oregon.  They were on their way to Yuma, AZ to have some dental work done in Los Algodones.  We had a great time catching up on our travels.

Been a while since I last did an update.  We have been fairly busy here at El Centro NAF so let me bring you up-to-date.

We took a drive north east of here to check out a place called Slab City.  Now I've been to a number of rodeos, a couple of rattlesnake roundups and a circus or two but I can tell you, I've never seen anything like "The Slab's".  The place even has it's own website:  http://www.slab-city.com/

Slab City attracts RV travelers, retirees and some permanent residents who want to live "off the grid" with like minded free thinker's.  There are no electrical or sewer hookup, no trash pickup and no water service.  But, there is a Internet Cafe', the Oasis Club and a church.

Some of the folks call themselves Hitch Hobo's.  Read about them here:  http://www.slab-city.com/hitch-hobos/
This is the first thing you see when arriving at Slab City.
I've had a lot of strange thing floating around in my head, but never anything like this.

Joyce wasn't feeling too well last week so we got her in to see a Navy nurse practitioner.  She prescribed some over-the-counter medications and a lot of rest.

While Joyce was recuperating, I got out one day and did some geocaching.  There are several interesting places here in the Imperial Valley.  I also made a day trip up to Julian where I visited the Pioneer Museum.  I got us one of Mom's  famous apple pies, which we didn't need, but oh, tastes so good.

Geocaching in the El Centro area.

On Saturday we drove over to the San Diego Naval Base and to North Island NAS to do some exchange shopping and look into getting tickets for a Catalina Island tour.  Not to self:  stay out of San Diego on the weekends!  Traffic, traffic and more traffic.
